Each capsul contains Orlistat 120 mg
Orlistat is a medicine designed to treat obesity. Its primary function is preventing the absorption of fats from the human diet by acting as a lipase inhibitor, thereby reducing caloric intake. It is intended for use in conjunction with a healthcare provider-supervised reduced-calorie diet.
Orlistat is the saturated derivative of lipstatin, a potent natural inhibitor of pancreatic lipases isolated from the bacterium Streptomyces toxytricini. However, due to its relative simplicity and stability, orlistat was chosen over lipstatin for development as an anti-obesity drug.
Indication : Obesity
Contra Indication
Chronic malabsorption syndrome, cholestasis, pregnancy and lactation.
Dosage
ADULT : Patients with BMI ≥ 30 mg/m2 or ≥ 27 kg/m2 with associated risk factors : 120 mg tid with each main meal containing fat. Patients with BMI ≥ 28 kg/m2 irrespective of any risk factors : 60 mg tid. Should be taken with food. Not recommended in children.
Special Precaution
Patient with history hyperoxaluria or Ca oxalate nephrolithiasis.
Adverse Reaction
Faecal urgency or incontinence, flatulence, fatty stools or discharge, headache, anxiety, fatigue, rectal bleeding, menstrual irregularities, leukocytoclactic vasculitis. Potentially Fatal : Severe liver damage with hepatocellular necrosis or acute hepatic failure.
Drug Interaction
Enhanced bioavailability & lipid lowering effect of Pravastin. Decreased absorption of Vit A, D, E, K, and β-carotene. Inhibits absorption of oral fat soluble-nutrients. Warfarin or other anticoagulants. Oral hypoglycemics.
