This drug contains finasteride as its main active ingredient. Finasteride itself belongs to drugs known as 5-alpha reductase inhibitors. This class of drugs works by blocking the action of 5-alpha-reductase, the enzyme that converts testosterone into dihydrotestosterone.
If this enzyme is not blocked, it can increase the amount of dihydrotestosterone which is closely related to prostate cancer and prostate enlargement. This drug is used to treat conditions such as symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) with symptoms of prostate enlargement.
The following are the general dosages for using finasteride based on the purpose:
Goal: Treat benign prostate enlargement (BPH) Adults: 5 mg, once daily, for at least 6 months. Treatment can be combined with doxazosin.
Objective: Treat baldness due to androgen hormones in men Adults: 1 mg, once daily, for at least 3 months.
